Factory Terminated or Field Terminated? Which is better?

August 4th, 2015

Fiber optic cable termination can be mainly split into two types that are factory termination and field termination. For tighter loss budget, the best approach is factory terminated cables since it is much easier to achieve low loss and quality connector terminations in a controlled factory environment. On the other hand, field terminations provide far more flexibility in meeting system requirements. As technicians face important trade-offs in deciding which method of choose, here provides a detailed comparison on merits and choices backward and forward types.

Which is better for Polishing Yields Figure 8 or Circular polishing? Seems like we all learned to hand polish in a figure 8 pattern?

August 4th, 2015

Well it all goes back to what we have always said, the Figure 8 pattern self centers everything. It always pushes the APEX to the center of the thing being polished, no matter if the plate moves or not. We did test thorughly in the early days by polishing 2.5 mm ferrules for several hours on 6um diamond film and the apex always remained in the center to EIA standards.   Mike Buzzetti

When polishing in a figure 8 motion, You are always bringing everything to the core of the connector. The angle of attack on the endface of a connector changes 720 degrees 60 times a second when you polish in a figure 8 motion. With all circular polishers the angle of attack is only changing 420 degrees. This can cause connectors to fall below the Bellcore specs and require a second polish just to pass inspection tests. Data Center's and MPO's

August 4th, 2015

MPO connectors are definitely a growing connector in data center applications. The QSFP, CXP and CFP have a MPO interface. The advantage of MT based connectors systems like the MPO is the ability to aggregate higher fiber counts into a smaller footprint when compared to the 2.5mm and 1.25mm based connector systems.  Companies like Amphenol Fiber Products in Lisle, IL are using MT ferrules for outside plant applications by putting them into NEMA rated connector shells like the PT shell which was originally developed for low voltage connections.  Your thoughts and experiences are welcomed.
